Advocate Spotlight: Kathy Fahl

At CASA of Santa Cruz County, we believe that every young person deserves the support and encouragement needed to build a positive future. Kathy, a dedicated CASA Advocate with a deep background in juvenile justice, has spent years guiding youth through some of life’s most difficult transitions.

Kathy’s amazing journey working with justice-involved populations began in 2009 when she started volunteering and leading art classes in the juvenile hall and co-leading the Healing from Violence class at the men’s jail. Her passion and desire to work with individuals on a one-to-one level led her to CASA, where she has been a steadfast Advocate for youth in the juvenile justice system.

Over the years, Kathy has served four youth, providing mentorship, guidance, and always her unwavering support. One had a particularly profound transformation. A youth named Carlie*.

Carlie faced immense challenges with little parental guidance and struggles with substance use. Despite these hardships, Carlie’s resilience shone through. With Kathy by her side, she committed to her recovery, worked diligently to complete alternative high school, and ultimately finished her court obligations.

Kathy’s approach was simple yet profound: “I told her I was going to stick like glue and be there for her.” And she was. Kathy picked Carlie up from school, shared meals at local restaurants, and provided a consistent, caring presence. Their bond was built on mutual respect, laughter, and trust. When it was time for deeper conversations about family, the future, and overcoming obstacles, they faced those moments together.

Today, Carlie is building her own life, employed and living independently, far removed from the instability of her past. Through it all, Kathy’s support helped her see a future full of possibilities.

Kathy’s belief in the power of advocacy is clear: “I look at our position here as the beginning of a new way of life. Transitioning into a productive life is a big job. Whether it’s a child, youth, or adult, people need help.” She encourages others to consider becoming a CASA Advocate for youth in the juvenile justice system, recognizing just how needed this support is.

Every young person deserves someone who will stick by them, believe in them, and remind them that they are important. Kathy embodies this commitment, and through her advocacy, she has helped change the trajectory of many young lives. If you are looking for a meaningful way to make a difference, consider joining our CASA team. The need has never been greater.
