Informal Probation and Evan's Artistic Journey

Informal Probation is a court-ordered diversion program designed to give at-risk youth a second chance and an opportunity to address the issues underlying their struggles, rather than immediately imposing life-changing legal consequences. If the youth completes the terms and conditions of their Informal Probation, the charges are dismissed, and the case is closed.

Recently, we served a teen who participated in this program. His journey illustrates how communal support can make a positive difference in a young person's trajectory.

When Evan* first entered the system for his role in a school fight, he faced the possibility of a formal sentence. However, the judge saw his potential for growth and allowed him to participate in Informal Probation instead. As a result, Evan received the personalized support he needed to constructively address his social challenges and adjust in a healthy way.

Evan’s parents actively supported him in successfully completing the program. Recognizing how important art was to him—and potentially healing—they provided him with art supplies and a dedicated space to enable creativity and channel his energy. His uncle, a professional artist, provided technical guidance and mentorship.

Evan’s CASA also played an encouraging role in his progress and growth. Recognizing that Evan—a shy and introverted youth—used art as a way to process his feelings and experiences, his advocate endeavored to create common ground and a respectful relationship through their mutual love of art.

The program required Evan to write a letter of apology—a task that was both challenging and transformative. It allowed Evan to reflect on his actions, take responsibility, and learn a valuable lesson about constructively handling conflicts and disagreements.

Evan’s successful completion of the Informal Probation program is a testament to the positive impact empathy and personalized community support can make. By addressing his individual needs, and avoiding punitive measures, the Informal Probation program allowed Evan to grow and move forward with a fresh slate.
