Building Belonging Through Extracurricular Opportunities

At CASA of Santa Cruz County, we believe that every young person deserves the chance to explore their interests, build confidence, and feel a sense of belonging.

Victoria Granger-Jones a dedicated CASA Advocate for over two and a half years, has been a steadfast supporter of two teenage siblings, guiding them through the challenges of adolescence and helping them build confidence and self-discovery through sports and the arts.

As a former high school teacher, Victoria understands firsthand the transformative power of extracurricular activities. Beyond their connection to academic achievement, these activities provide young people with an opportunity to develop resilience, teamwork, and a sense of identity. For youth who have faced significant family trauma and instability, these opportunities are even more critical.

Both of the siblings Victoria advocates for have found joy and purpose through sports. From soccer to volleyball, basketball to flag football, they’ve embraced the discipline, teamwork, and dedication required to excel. The older sister has taken on the challenge of making her high school basketball and softball teams, learning to manage daily practices while maintaining her academic performance.

Beyond sports, Victoria saw another passion emerge in the older sibling—folklorico dance. This traditional Mexican dance is more than just movement; it’s a celebration of culture, history, and self-expression. However, without the traditional, colorful folklorico dresses, she was unable to fully participate in performances. Thanks to the Children’s Fund, CASA was able to provide her with a beautiful full-skirted dress, allowing her to take center stage. From Watsonville’s Cinco de Mayo celebrations to the Fourth of July parade and a breathtaking performance at the Boardwalk’s Fiesta de la Playa, she has embraced her heritage with pride and joy.

The journey of these two siblings highlights the power of extracurricular activities in shaping young lives. Through sports and the arts, they have found a sense of belonging, developed critical life skills, and discovered new passions. Their dedication, perseverance, and joy in these pursuits showcase their resilience and the potential that lies within every young person when given the opportunity to thrive.
