For more than a decade, Kathy Hundemer has been a CASA volunteer, bringing empathy, expertise, and a steady presence to children navigating some of the most challenging times of their lives. A retired school nurse, Kathy’s professional experience coupled with her warmth and compassion helped children and their families feel seen, safe, and valued. Over the years, Kathy has advocated for five children, each with unique circumstances, all with very positive outcomes.
Her first match was with a young girl placed in foster care and separated from her siblings. This trauma caused the girl to become dysregulated and develop behavior issues. Kathy spent time with this young girl regularly, taking her to visit her siblings, going on outings, and visiting the CASA House. Fortunately, the girl was eventually reunited with her family, and Kathy was there to help with transitions. Many years later, the family recognized Kathy while out in the community and warmly greeted her, affirming how important Kathy was to all of them.
Kathy also worked with newborns, infants, and toddlers whose parents struggled with substance use disorder as well as housing instability. With her nursing background, she collaborated closely with resource parents and therapists to ensure children’s health and development were prioritized.
Kathy’s dedication to families extends beyond when their time in court ended. She celebrates milestones, attends adoption ceremonies and birthdays, and stays connected with the children and families she has supported, even years later. Her empathy, patience, and dedication make her an extraordinary CASA volunteer. Not only was she there for the court dates and writing court reports; she also built relationships and trust.
Reflecting on her service, Kathy is grateful that all the children she worked with ended up in safe and loving homes.
Kathy’s decade of service is a powerful reminder that one caring adult can change the trajectory of a child’s life, offering hope, stability, and joy when it’s needed most.
