- Helping Young Children Cope with Stress and Trauma-Video (1.5 hour of continuing education) Speaker: Alicia F. Lieberman, Ph.D. Infants and toddlers are often exposed to upsetting and frightening events that may range from the routine conflicts of everyday life to traumatic situations like harsh or abusive treatment and witnessing violence in their family or community. Because their cognitive capacity to speak about these situations is still immature and they are often warned by their parents or caregivers not to talk about problems in the home, infants and toddlers often express their worries and fears through disruptive behaviors like aggression towards peers and teachers, non-compliance, and difficulty with transitions. This presentation describes the manifestations of stress and trauma in early childhood and outlines interventions that can help the child to regulate intense negative feelings in the context of a childcare setting.

Routines provide the two key ingredients necessary for learning: relationships and repetition. Read this article to learn more about how to support routines for young children.
